Helping a Loved One

How to Convince a Loved One to Seek Treatment for Suicidal Ideation

There are a number of reasons people who are thinking about harming themselves or committing suicide may not ask for help. Most individuals say they are hopeless, and that nothing can help improve their life. They feel no one understands their pain. Other reasons individuals thinking about suicide rarely seek help on their own include:

  • They fear others see view them negatively or blame a flaw in their character if they share their feelings and thoughts
  • They often have limited coping strategies for stress and can’t generate multiple solutions for interpersonal problems
  • They believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness
  • They believe others will consider them to be cowards if they knew their thoughts.

If your loved one is experiencing suicidal thoughts, it’s vital to help them into treatment before they harm themselves. Sit down and have an open and frank discussion with your loved one about their feelings without being judgmental. Avoid using “you” statements, which sound harsh. Instead, gently remind them that they are loved no matter what and that you will support them through their entire journey.

Conduct research into mental health treatment centers in Tampa that focus on healing those struggling with suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Make an appointment with an intake coordinator so that you can ask questions about what treatment entails to reduce some of your anxieties. See if you can schedule a time for you and your loved one to tour the treatment center to ease their fears about entering into a psychiatric hospital.

Types of Therapy

Types of Therapy We Use to Treat Suicidal Ideation

There are a number of treatment methods we employ at our treatment center to address suicidal ideations and behavior. Common treatment options used include anti-anxiety medications and antidepressants and others as necessary to treat co-occurring disorders. These medications may be used only at the beginning of treatment to decrease symptom severity, enabling the individual to better engage in the therapeutic process. Many men and women can be weaned off medications as they learn different coping strategies, different thought and behavior patterns, and expand their ability to deal with life stressors.

Group therapy is another common type of therapy we utilize at North Tampa. These may be process groups related to a common theme or focusing on co-occurring problem, or risk factors related to suicide attempts. Other groups are psycho-educational which are used to present information on such topics as medications, common symptoms, and other disorders that frequently co-occur with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Other groups at our treatment ceter may be skills-based, focusing on coping strategies, re-entering social situations, stress management, assertiveness skills, risk factors for triggering thought of suicide, and relapse prevention.

Cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be the most effective type of psychotherapy for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This type of therapy addresses errors in thinking, helping the person to challenge such thoughts and replace them with more adaptive ways of evaluating their world.

Family consultation is important at our suicidal ideations treatment center and we conduct one family consultation per week. These consultations are aimed at helping the family understand the symptoms of suicidal ideation that their loved one is experiencing and the treatment plan, validating the family’s feelings, and providing support. We also provide referrals for additional therapy and information about numerous community resources in Tampa and elsewhere they can use to cope with their loved one’s symptoms.

Continuing Care

Continuing Care – What Comes Next?

Once you are ready to be discharged from our inpatient program you will work with your treatment team to create an aftercare plan. This often involves our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), or Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). PHP programs meet more frequently for more hours per day. In cases where the individual is not ready to leave an inpatient-like setting but no longer needs the intense treatment and supervision of an inpatient facility, a residential treatment center may be appropriate.

North Tampa helped me realize again that there is so much to live for. I have hope for a better life now and I appreciate all the care their team showed me.
